Smothered Round Steak With Gravy Recipe
Prep: 15 minutes
Cook: 45 minutes
Yields: 4 servings
Get ready to sink your teeth into the most tender and flavorful round steak of your life!
Imagine a juicy, smothered round steak, cooked to perfection and served with a rich, savory gravy that’ll make your taste buds do the happy dance!

First, let’s get our steak ready for its close-up! Sprinkle both sides of the round steak pieces with salt and pepper, making sure to rub that seasoning into the meat like you mean it!
Next, combine 1/2 cup of flour and a pinch of garlic powder in a big ol’ resealable bag. Add the steak pieces, seal that bag, and shake it like a polaroid picture to coat those bad boys evenly!

Heat up about 1/3 cup of oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it’s hot, hot, hot! Add the seasoned and floured steak pieces in batches, making sure not to overcrowd that skillet. Cook until they’re browned on both sides, about 4 to 5 minutes per side.
Remove the steak from the skillet and set it aside, but don’t worry, it’ll be back! Add some sliced onions to the same skillet and stir until they’re coated in those delicious pan drippings. Cook until they’re just starting to soften, about 2 minutes.

Now it’s time to make that gravy! Stir together some water, beef base, and Worcestershire sauce in a microwave-safe container. Microwave on high for 1 minute, stir, and pour it into the skillet. Cover that skillet and reduce the heat to a simmer, letting it cook until the steak is tender, about 45 minutes.
While that steak is cooking, let’s make the gravy even richer! Remove the steak from the skillet and add the reserved 1/2 cup of flour to the pan drippings. Increase the heat to medium and stir briskly until it’s bubbly, about 2 to 3 minutes. Then, stir in some milk and keep stirring until it’s bubbly again!

Finally, return the steak, onions, and any accumulated juices to the skillet, cover it, and reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it cook, stirring occasionally, until all those flavors are well combined, about 10 minutes.
And that’s it! Serve that smothered round steak with a side of mashed potatoes and biscuits, and you’ve got yourself a meal fit for a king (or queen, or foodie, or anyone who loves good food)!
