Get ready for a comfort food explosion that will leave you craving for more. Today, we’re talking about a mouth-watering twist on the classic salisbury steak, smothered in a rich stout and onion BBQ gravy that will make your taste buds do the happy dance.

First things first, let’s talk about the star of the show: the salisbury steak. It’s not actually steak at all, but seasoned ground beef formed into patties that resemble a steak shape. Don’t worry, it’s easy to make and requires minimal effort. Just grab some regular ground beef (85/15 or 90/10 works great) and get ready to create a masterpiece.

Now, let’s talk about the magic that happens when you add a panade to the mix. A panade is just a fancy term for a paste made from bread and milk, but trust us, it’s a total game-changer. It keeps the patties moist and tender, and it’s worth the extra step. Simply tear some white bread into small pieces, add a splash of milk, and mix until it forms a smooth paste.

Now that we have our panade, it’s time to form the patties. Mix the ground beef with the panade, some egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Don’t overwork the meat, or you’ll end up with tough patties. Just mix until everything is well combined, then shape into patties that resemble a steak shape.

Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, and add a tablespoon of oil. Sear the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they’re nicely browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

Now it’s time to make the stout and onion BBQ gravy. Add a tablespoon of oil to the same skillet, then add sliced onions and cook until they’re softened and caramelized. Add a cup of stout, a cup of beef broth, and a tablespoon of BBQ sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes.

Stir in a tablespoon of cornstarch and a tablespoon of water, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Return the patties to the skillet, and spoon some of that amazing gravy over the top. Simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.

And that’s it! Serve the salisbury steak hot, smothered in that incredible stout and onion BBQ gravy. It’s a comfort food dream come true.
